Laser Treatment Q & A

What are laser and light treatments?

Laser and light treatments use different energy wavelengths to stimulate responses in varying layers of the skin. When energy reacts with pigments or other elements of skin, it triggers specific responses that achieve a wide range of objectives, including improvements in skin tone, improvements to texture, and even hair removal. Laser and light treatments enable patients to have the same benefits of more invasive procedures, but without the associated risks and downtime.

What conditions can Dr. Harris treat?

Different types of energy — laser, radiofrequency, and light energies — achieve different effects, including:

  • Skin tightening
  • Reduction of wrinkles
  • Improvements in skin texture
  • Reduction of photoaging effects, like sun damage
  • Reduction in hyperpigmentation, resulting in age spots and melasma
  • Hair removal

Dr. Harris is skilled in understanding which types of skin issues respond to different types of energy. During your evaluation, he discusses the options that helps you achieve your goals for the best possible results.

How many treatments will I need?

That depends on the treatment you choose and your goals. Some patients achieve adequate results after a single appointment, while others may need more than 1 treatment to get the results they want. Dr. Harris discusses the number of treatments you may need for your goals and based on the treatment approach you select.

What types of laser and light procedures does Dr. Harris offer?

There are a number of devices that deliver different types of light for skin treatment, including Fractora and Diolaze. Dr. Harris uses the Excimer laser for therapeutic treatment of eczema, vitiligo, and psoriasis, treating the plaques directly, without affecting surrounding skin.

A different type of light technology — intense pulsed light (IPL) — differs from laser in that it uses multiple wavelengths of light rather than the single, tuned wavelengths lasers use. While both work in a similar way for cosmetic procedures, effectiveness varies between patients and skin types. Dr. Harris uses the Lumecca® IPL system to treat age spots and other minor skin discoloration, lines, visible blood vessels, and rosacea.

Dr. Harris also uses BodyFX for treatments such as skin tightening and improvements in skin texture.

What does the Diolaze system do?

The forte of the Diolaze system is hair removal from the face, neck or other areas. It’s one of the fastest and most powerful diode laser systems with a large treatment area, with enough energy to take on the most stubborn body hair. The Diolaze head has built-in cooling that keeps the tissue surrounding the hair follicles cool and undamaged, keeping treatments virtually painless for the patient, with little to no down time. From the treatment chair, the patient can return to work or other daily events. The Diolaze also covers a wide range of skin and hair colors, something that stymies other hair removal systems. Short, effective treatment times make Diolaze hair removal budget-friendly.
