Dermatologists located in Yuma, AZ

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, but when caught early, it’s also highly treatable. At Integrated Dermatology of Yuma, our board-certified dermatologists provide expert melanoma screening, diagnosis, and treatment to protect your health and potentially save your life.

What Is Melanoma?

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that begins in melanocytes—the cells that give your skin its pigment. It can develop from an existing mole or appear as a new, abnormal spot on the skin.

Melanoma can spread quickly to other parts of the body, which is why early detection is critical.

Warning Signs of Melanoma

Use the ABCDE rule to identify suspicious moles or skin changes:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half doesn't match the other
  • B – Border: Edges are irregular, blurred, or jagged
  • C – Color: Uneven color or multiple shades
  • D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
  • E – Evolving: Changes in size, shape, or color over time

Other warning signs include itching, bleeding, or a mole that looks noticeably different from others (the “ugly duckling” sign).

Who’s at Risk for Melanoma?

Anyone can get melanoma, but risk factors include:

  • Excessive sun exposure or tanning bed use
  • Fair skin, light eyes, or freckles
  • A family or personal history of skin cancer
  • Having many moles or atypical (dysplastic) moles
  • A weakened immune system
