Mole Evaluation & Removal Q&A

What Are Moles?

Moles (also called nevi) are clusters of pigmented skin cells that usually appear as small, brown or black spots. Most are harmless, but some moles can become atypical or cancerous, making it important to have them checked by a dermatologist—especially if they change in shape, size, or color.

When to See a Dermatologist for a Mole

Watch for the ABCDEs of melanoma, which can indicate that a mole may be cancerous:

  • Asymmetry – one half looks different than the other
  • Border – irregular or blurred edges
  • Color – multiple colors or uneven color
  • Diameter – larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
  • Evolving – changes in size, shape, color, or elevation

If you notice any of these signs or have a mole that itches, bleeds, or becomes painful, schedule an evaluation right away.

Our Mole Evaluation Process

At Integrated Dermatology of Yuma, we provide thorough skin exams using dermoscopy, a magnification tool that helps us assess moles with greater precision. If a mole looks suspicious, we may recommend a skin biopsy to rule out skin cancer or precancerous changes.

Mole Removal Options

Whether a mole is medically concerning or simply unwanted for cosmetic reasons, we offer several safe removal methods:

  • Surgical excision – removes the entire mole and some surrounding tissue
  • Shave removal – gently shaves the mole from the skin’s surface
  • Punch biopsy – removes a small, round section for testing

All procedures are performed in-office with minimal discomfort and little to no downtime.

Cosmetic Mole Removal

If you have a mole that’s raised, in a sensitive area, or affecting your confidence, we can remove it for aesthetic reasons—even if it’s benign. We’ll evaluate your skin and discuss the best approach to ensure minimal scarring and optimal cosmetic results.
