What Are Moles?

Moles (also called nevi) are clusters of pigmented skin cells that usually appear as small, brown or black spots. Most are harmless, but some moles can become atypical or cancerous, making it important to have them checked by a dermatologist—especially if they change in shape, size, or color.

When to See a Dermatologist for a Mole

Watch for the ABCDEs of melanoma, which can indicate that a mole may be cancerous:

• Asymmetry – one half looks different than the other
• Border – irregular or blurred edges
• Color – multiple colors or uneven color
• Diameter – larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
• Evolving – changes in size, shape, color, or elevation
